Out of contention.

Hockey Boy was oh so happy that I snuck up and took his picture

Hockey Boy has been sick for over ten days.

Last Wednesday he awoke complaining of a sore throat and running a fever. I took him in to our pediatrician's office where he tested negative for both flu and strep. The doctor told us this was likely a virus that would take several days to run its course.

The following Tuesday Hockey Boy said his throat still hurt. I called and spoke to the nurse at the pediatrician's office who told me that these viruses could take a week to go away but to bring him in if he wasn't better by Thursday.

By the time Thursday rolled around, Hockey Boy was continuing to complain about his throat and his voice also sounded a little strange. I had run out of tolerance for all of his moaning and carrying on back on about Day 3 (he is one of the world's worst patients, with close to zero pain tolerance), so I took him back to the doctor. This time the pediatrician seemed a little more concerned about the way Hockey Boy's throat looked, and he arranged for us to see an ENT.

The ENT diagnosed Hockey Boy with an abscess behind one of his tonsils. He said this was a terribly painful condition and prescribed painkillers as well as a strong course of antibiotics. The ENT gave us his personal cell phone number telling me that it was possible Hockey Boy might have to have an emergency tonsillectomy over the weekend!

Hockey Boy seems to be doing better, though I'm not sure how we're supposed to tell when he's taking painkillers. I, on the other hand, have further dimmed my chances of ever being Mother of the Year by receiving a zero in the sympathetic heart category.

We go back to the ENT first thing in the morning to determine whether the antibiotics are effective enough or if we should go ahead and remove Hockey Boy's tonsils. I obviously hope for the former case, though caring for Hockey Boy after surgery would certainly be apt penance for me.

Poor Will! Here's hoping the antibiotics are working so the tonsils can stay intact. The hockey teams need him -

Poor guy! There is nothing worse than a sore throat. My oldest ds is a bit of a baby when sick, kind of reminds me of my dh. ;) Hope he feels better soon.

Isn't that early to be developing the Man Flu? ;) My hubs is a big baby when he's sick, many a blogger has spoken of the Man Flu being the worst of the illnesses that men contract. Read up on it if you're looking for a giggle!

I do hope, with all sincerity, that Hockey Boy gets a clean bill of health tomorrow, surgery is no fun!

That's brutal! Poor hockey boy. As for the mother of the year award...you are most certainly still at the top of the list. Mothers are taught to be suspicious of their pain embellishment, especially when they get to be school age. It's always so hard to know and you had already visited the doctor. I am so glad the ENT found it and is treating it. I sure hope you get good news at tomomrrow's appointment!

Men are the WORST patients....so I guess Will is already a man. sigh.

Hope all goes well tomorrow..... for both your sakes.

You will always be the Mother of the Year as far as I am concerned.

Poor kid! If it makes you feel any better, I had my tonsils out and think I'm better for it - I rarely get sick! :) Keep us posted on his recovery!

If it makes you feel any better, I took my time reacting to what turned out to be my daughter's appendicitis because when she was a kid she was quite the drama queen when anything hurt. Hope Hockey Boy doesn't need his tonsils out!

Dreadful. Just dreadful. I hope he is O.K. Poor kid. And poor you! I have learned that it is never too late for one of those "childhood" diseases to revisit your child. Even when they're not a child any longer. Take care friend!

Ick -- no fun for Hockey Boy (or Hockey Boy's mom). I hope all is better today and that no tonsillectomy is needed.

are they sure he didn't have mono? my bf's daughter has this huge lymph node by her tonsil and it was a classic presentation of mono the dr. said - it is so huge it looks like a piece of bagel stuck by her tonsil. I just wonder - if he was checked for mono? Now I'm worried about my potential son in law!!!! hehe
